Athletes And Alcoholic Beverages

Plenty of athletes run into a problem when it comes to alcohol. Surfers, snowboarders, and bikers enjoy the occasional beer or glass of wine just as much as anyone else.

If you are planning on drinking alcohol and participating in sports, the key is to provide your body with enough time to metabolize the alcohol. This process usually takes about 24 hours. Furthermore, alcohol puts the body in danger of becoming dehydrated. To stay fully hydrated, it is important to drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids before and after alcohol consumption. Water and transparent juices are perfect for hydration. It is also essential to know your limit. Drinking alcoholic beverages to excess is one of the worst things that an athlete can do to his or her body. By limiting alcohol consumption to one or two drinks and increasing the space between those drinks, you can decrease the negative consequences of a glass of wine in the evening or a cocktail at the local bar.

Another option is to shop for beer or wine online. The internet offers a wide variety of beverages with various properties that could be more fitting for an athlete. Naturally, some wines are better for your health than others. Beverages with a low Glycemic Index or low alcohol content can allow the sportsman to socialize while not sacrificing the sporting schedule.

We all have our guilty pleasures and it would be quite the challenge to avoid alcoholic beverages completely. Drink responsibly and remember that an athlete’s health is the key to his or her success!
