The Quiksilver Pro France starts tomorrow!
The only French leg of the 2008 ASP World Tour will begin on 19th September in Hossegor and Seignosse with the top names in the male surfing world taking part. More than ever before, star competitor Kelly Slater will be the focus of keen attention.
Already leading the championship standings and winning five of this season’s first seven legs, the Floridian legend has the opportunity to blow a 9th world title in France. Frenchman Jérémy Florès, ranked n°10, is also on fire after placing 3 rd of the Trestles event in California last week. Miky Picon will be one of the men to follow. The local of Capbreton knows these beach breaks better than anyone.
Contest directors Rod Brooks (Australia) and Charley Puyo (France) will try to find the possible best conditions in the 10 days waiting period starting Friday 19 till Sunday 28th of September. According to the forecast, a new swell should arrive this week end and get stronger next Tuesday. First round of the Quiksilver Pro France could be in the water this week end. The King of the Groms International Final gathering world’s 16 and under surfers, could be launched as well on Saturday.
The Quiksilver Pro France main podium is settled on Plage de la Gravière in Hossegor. Thanks to a mobile podium, the contest directors will probably decide to move the event to the neighbouring beach of les Estagnots in Seignosse to find the best conditions.
Michel Bourez (Tahiti), Joan Duru (France) and Tim Boal (France) winner of today’s trials, get the wildcards and complete the final draw of the event.
Tony Hawk in Hossegor The stand out event of the Quiksilver Pro 2008! Tony Hawk, the biggest skateboard legend of them all, will be in Hossegor during the Quiksilver Pro France for a live show on the beach. The Tony Hawk Show will take place on Saturday 20th September at the town’s Place des Landais, where Hawk will be joined by his gang - Jess Fritsch, Sergie Ventura, Elliot Sloan, Andy MacDonald or even Kevin Staab, and from Europe Sasha Muller, Pete King and Jürgen Horwarth. Their skills will be put to the test on a big ramp specially constructed for the occasion. The Tony Hawk Show will be followed by a concert by Beat Assaillant. Entry is free.
Melanie Bartels wins Billabong Girls Pro Rio in Rifling Barrels
Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, has won the 2008 Billabong Girls Pro Rio, defeating fellow finalist Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, in rifling four foot (1.5 metre) barrels at Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro today.
Mullen and Barley flare in improved conditions on day two of Oakley Newport Beach Pro
The second day of the Oakley Newport Beach Pro saw standout surfing from Macy Mullen (Mililani, HI), 28, Brett Barley (Outer Banks, NC), 18 and Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 17, in Round 3.
