Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2010: Unfortunate Cancellations In Spain
The economic crisis strikes again. At this point, the IKA Kite and ISWC Windsurfing Speed World Championships have already been canceled, in addition to the PWA Women's Freestyle.
As budget cuts are being made nationwide, the Spanish government is unable to provide the promised amounts and has withdrawn a portion of the financial support for the event. Without the necessary funds, event organizers had no choice but to cancel parts of the event.
So far, the IKA Kite and ISWC Windsurfing Speed World Championships have been cancelled. To make matters worse, the PWA Women’s Freestyle has also been removed from the agenda.
Many will be understandably disappointed by the cancellations, but it is important to realize that these decisions have been made reluctantly with the future of the event in mind. As more and more financial cuts are made, it will be a struggle to keep the event alive in its entirety.
To preserve the long term future of the windsurfing event, organizers had to take extreme and unpleasant measures.
Men’s Slalom and men’s Freestyle will take place as planned at the 2010 Fuerteventura Grand Slam and event organizers have every intention to bring the cancelled events back in future years.
