ASP World 2010: Kelly Slater Has Ratings Lead
After the third event of the ASP World Championships, Kelly Slater has snatched the ratings lead from Taj Burrow. If he plays his cards right, he will have an excellent chance at the 2010 ASP World title.
Slater is now in the 2010 ASP World Title ratings lead, after placing second and succumbing to Jadson Andre at the Billabong Pro Santa Catarina.
Slater’s second place finish in Brazil meant a victory over Taj Burrow, who had the ratings lead earlier in the season. After event No. 5, the current 45 man field will be cut down to a 32-man format for the rest of the season.
Kelly Slater, who claimed first place at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, continued to build momentum at Billabong Pro Santa Catarina and finally surpassed Burrow to take the ASP World Title No. 1 position.
"It definitely puts me in a good spot this season heading into Jeffreys Bay and Tahiti," said Kelly Slater. "I think it's been almost two years since I've led the rankings and yeah, it feels good."
Slater plays down his defeat, realizing that losing to Jadson Andre will not significantly hurt his chances for the title.
"Obviously, you want to win every heat, but that said, I didn't lose to a Mick Fanning or a Joel Parkinson or a Jordy Smith who are probably bigger threats in terms of the title," said Slater.
The ASP World Championships will resume with the fourth event, Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, scheduled for July 15 - 25, 2010.
