Inconsistent Surf At The ASP 5Star Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro
Round Four was delayed by two hours due to low tide. Since the forecast for the remainder of the waiting period was not clear, organizers had to run sets as soon as the reef at El Confital was covered with water.
The 2010 Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro stepped it up a notch as the surfers fought to make it into the quarter finals. Australians Heath Joske and Davey Cathels battled it out and it was Joske that overcame the tricky conditions of El Confital and emerged triumphant.
Heath Joske posted an impressive combined heat total of 17.33 to surpass fellow Australian Davey Cathels' 17.00 out of 20. Joske scored a near perfect 9.8 out of 10.
“I do feel a bit bad actually," admitted Joske. "Cathels was surfing amazingly. It was super exciting and we were chatting out in the line-up between waves but it got a bit serious at the end when he started pulling those 8’s out of the bag."
Despite losing, Davey Cathels was pleased with his overall performance at the Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro and gave full credit to his victor.
“You don’t get many heats where you get three 8’s and you lose but it is better to lose that way than to not get any scores at all. It was fun out there with Heath - a good heat for sure with him and I’m not too disappointed.”
Jesse Mendes scored one of the highest single wave scores of the day with a scintillating backhand assault to claim an 8.67 out of a possible 10. Holding priority and perfectly positioned on the peak, Mendes cracked off four consecutive turns to finish on the dry reef and take a commanding lead over Aritz Aranburu.
“I knew Aritz was going to be a tough guy to beat, probably one of the hardest in the contest, so I had to be patient and wait for the sets,” said Mendes.
Priority and patience were the keys to Mendes making it through to the quarter finals, his second best result of the year.
After two lay days, a huge ground swell is expected and will hopefully allow for a possible crowning of the Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro 2010 champion.
