ASP 1-Star Cordoama Buondi Pro 2010 Results
Gony Zubizarreta claims the title at the 2010 ASP 1-Star Cordoama Buondi Pro. The competition was close until the very end, but Marlon Lipke and Nicolaus Rupp couldn't beat Gony's high scores.
Waves in the 3ft range improved as the tides changed, giving Zubizarreta the opportunity to score both a 7.33 and an 8.33 out of 10.
“It feels so good to win this event because the level was so high and everyone was ripping out there during the entire event," said Gony Zubizarreta. "Marlon Lipke was surfing so strong here at his home break and he is really tough to beat so it makes it feel even better to win here.”
Now, Zubizarreta reflects on the past competitions and tries to pinpoint the factor that changed his luck in Cordoama.
“I have been losing a lot of heats this year and I don’t know why but I couldn’t find my rhythm in the heats and maybe putting too much pressure on myself and now I went out and was trying to have fun and to do the right things in the heats.”
Marlon Lipke may have landed in second place, but he never stopped trying. Surfing today on a different board Lipke felt that perhaps his choice of equipment may have been a reason for his defeat in the final.
“I changed my boards and I forgot that I was on a smaller board," explained Lipke. "I blew a couple of my waves and I looked a bit too nervous and I should have been calmer but Gony ripped out there so it was hard to win out there anyhow.”\
However, Lipke is not letting his defeat get him down.
“We surfed really close to the shore and it was great for the crowd and everyone came together on the beach and it was just great to surf against Gony in the final and we had a laugh together in the water.”
Nicolaus Rupp, also of Germany, finished equal third after being eliminated by Zubizarreta. Rupp had terrible luck with waves and couldn't find the perfect one to display is abilities at the Cordoama Buondi Pro.
The Cordoama Buondi Pro is stop No. 3 of 12 which will eventually decide the 2010 ASP European Champion.
