Northface Masters Of Snowboarding 2010: Robinson and Yates Claim Title
The results are in for the 2010 Northface Masters Of Snowboarding and the masters have been named. Aaron Robinson and Shannan Yates now hold the titles and their really cool Japanese swords.
Kirkwood, California,--The final stop of the North Face Masters of Snowboarding 2010 took place at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, California, this weekend as this essentially perfect competition at the impossibly-steep "Cirque came to a close.
Cirque is considered one of the best alpine venues in the nation, since it is well shielded from storms and provides an excellent viewing arena for fans. Hundreds of spectators showed up to witness the day's events.
Despite Cirque's great conditions, the relentless wind and snow storms on Day 1 forced the resort to close down the high-elevation chairlift. It was worth the delay though, because the additional two feet of snow set the stage for an awesome finale.
Infamous snowboard icon Shawn Farmer tested the course before the final heats. With yesterday's points not carrying over, athletes came into the finals and super finals with a clean slate, with the better of two runs deciding the winners.
The second to last boarder this morning was Shannan Yates of Snowbird, Utah. Yates impressed the judges with her several cliff-drops and by choosing a technical line with extensive rock exposure. Her super finals run was merely for show as she had already snatched the title with her first run, which also earned her enough points to take the overall 2010 TNF Masters Tour title. "I had a great season with the North Face Masters and visited new places, met new people and became a better athlete," said Yates. It cannot be debated that Shannon Yates used the entire series of Masters contests to take women's snowboarding to the next level.
On the men's side of the competition, Aaron Robinson of Big Mountain, Montana, deservingly received one of the unbelievably-sharp Japanese swords made for the winners of the men's and women's divisions. Robinson commented on his line choice: "I absolutely love the North Face Masters with its judges and crew. I wanted to make sure I rode into the powder so I pointed it and the landing was nice." Robinson was also granted the overall TNF Masters 2010 tour title.
Kirkwood's own Joe Forest took second place by following winner Robinson's line into the Hidden Chute area of the Cirque with mandatory 35-foot cliff dropps. The North Face team ride Ralph Backstrom of Sqauw Valley, California, finished third place with a strong and powerful run.
Alex Yoder, 20, from Jackson Hole, Wyoming earned "The North Face Young Gun Award" for his astounding performance throughout the North Face Masters of Snowboarding Tour.
