Iron Night 2009: Boarder and Freeskier at Crystal Ground
On Saturday February 14th the Crystal Ground – Snowpark Kleinwalsertal again becomes the place-to-be for the snowboarding and freeski scene.
This contest has definitely gained cult status and meanwhile takes place for the sixth time at Crystal Ground in Riezlern, Kleinwalsertal. Like in the previous years, the Iron Night will again attract riders from many different countries. Since its inauguration, the contest has been a meeting from riders for riders, where the highly motivated participants always give their best in an exciting competition. Being a Swatch TTR 2 Star Event, the winners in the categories snowboard men and snowboard girls will even take home up to 200 world ranking points.
Traditionally, the Crystal Ground is going to be redesigned especially for the Iron Night and a challenging, spectacular setup will be created. The team of park managers around Florian Geiger has been planning the setup for a long time and one may of course be looking forward to the outcome. A top class setup will be waiting for the participants, on which they will show all their skills. But details will not be revealed here.
For the first time in its history, the Iron Night 2009 already starts on Friday, February 13th. In the afternoon the riders have the possibility to get familiar with the setup and in the evening the Playboard Party will take place at the M&M Bar, Riezlern as a warm-up for the contest on Saturday.
On Saturday morning things will be coming to a head. At the kids contest, the young blood will be granted the chance to present themselves on the “big stage”. The kids meanwhile ride on a very high level and one may be looking forward to a thrilling and exciting contest.
The speakers Christian Bachmann and Toby Hammer will accompany the action on the setup throughout the whole day and provide a matching atmosphere in and around the snowpark.
In the afternoon the participants in the categories girls ski & snowboard and men ski & snowboard will start off and outgun each other with harder and harder tricks. In the evening the snowpark will be turned into glistening flood light for the finals and super finals. Here, the riders will empirically show their best moves and provide a breathtaking show.
According to the tradition of the Iron Night, there will again be a best-trick contest subsequent to the regular competition at which the Crystal Ground annually turns into a veritable boiling pot. A massive, multifunctional obstacle will be created for the Red Bull Best Trick, where every rider will find his personal challenge. The obstacle will consist of a huge upbox, a picknick table as well as a gap-to-downbox combo and various other spectacular features.
The “Funk Food” after show party subsequent to the contest is also a fix part of every year’s Iron Night. This time there will be two totally different areas, which will not only differ in the choice of music, but also in the decoration.
After the first day of competition with fresh snow and sunshine with an enthusiastic crowd, the 56 riders had a day to recuperate as Day 2 was postponed due to warmer temperatures.
In the last competition of the 2009 FIS Snowboard World Championships Gangwon, Korea, one Finnish rider proofed once again that Big Air is its home country’s domain.
