The North Face Freeskiing World Tour Heads to South America
The world’s best freeskiers are on their way to South America for the first few stops of the Freeskiing World Tour. These snowy mountains are the perfect place to fight for the event title, World Tour points, and a cash purse.
The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships will kick off the 2011 season of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour on August 19, 2010. A few days later, Stop #2 will start in Las Leñas, Argentina on August 25.
“Its amazing that after 12 years the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour is returning to the original South American freeskiing venue, Las Leñas Argentina,” said FWT Competition Director Bryan Barlow.
“It’s a true fit for the tour," continued Barlow. "The mountains are truly unrivaled in the world, allowing the athletes to showcase their progressive big mountain freesking skills that has accelerated freeskiing popularity and awareness to the mainstream around the world.”
The Las Leñas resort is thrilled to be hosting the competition.
“We are very proud to be the ski resort of choice for Argentina’s first edition of the FWT,” said Las Leñas marketing manager Sofía Fernández Madero. “The natural characteristics of our mountain and the climate favors our position as a destination of excellence and real snow off-piste mecca in the region.”
Now in its 13th year, the Freeskiing World Tour is the largest and longest running competitive Big Mountain Freeskiing tour in the history of the sport.
The Freeskiing World Tour presented by the North Face features over $100,000 in prize money and an unprecedented six stops, including a Freeskiing World Tour Qualifier.
The New Zealander Russ Henshaw has won one of the most important Big Air Events of Europe, the Frostgun Invitational in Val Thorens. Not only has he proven himself as a skiier, but now he also has an extra 10,000 euros of prize money in his pocket.
The story is like something out of a fairytale. Markus Eder never dreamed that his "Wanna Be A Knight?" video would launch his freeskiing career and crown him the winner of the 2010 Nine Knights big air contest.
